NEWS FLASH!!!  Second Saturdays in Media...

Tuscarora Lapidary Society is now participating in Media, PA's Second Saturday program - a monthly event where businesses are open from 6pm to, at least, 9pm run by the Media Art Council.  There is live music at many open establishments.

Months that we will be participating are June - October of this year.  On the second Saturday of the month, from 6pm to 9pm, please come and visit our Media facility at 105 W. Jasper Street.  Some of our members will be there answering questions about the lapidary hobby and demonstrating skills on the machines.  Also, unique items handmade by our club members will be available for sale benefiting our "New Home Fund".  Please come out to Media, PA for an evening of fun and stop by.  (Jasper Street is one block north running parallel to State Street near the cross street of Olive.)

Next public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September10, 2008

September 10, 2008

Frank Schaffer

Mr. Schaffer, a jeweler in Philadelphia, will talk about spotting fakes when buying gems.  he will also discuss buying at online auctions like eBay.

Please join us!

Meetings are held at the Springfield Township Building*, 50 Powell Rd., Springfield, PA at 8:00 pm.

Come a bit early for conversation and to meet other members of the club.

Our typical meetings include a brief business meeting followed by the topic presentation featured that month.   Non-members are welcome and there is no charge to attend.

*From Rt. 476 (Blue Route, as it is known by local Philadelphians), take the Rt. 1 exit (#5) and turn north on Rt. 1 (actually in an easterly direction).  Cross junction of Rt. 320 and get in right lane.  Turn right on Springfield Rd. and follow about 1 mile, crossing rail line.  Turn right onto Powell Road and then right into the Springfield Township's driveway a short distance later.

FUTURE MEETINGS SCHEDULED:

October 8th, 2008

Silent Auction

Members of TLS will bring items that they no longer need/want to be auctioned at this monthly meeting.  Look for faceting and cabbing rough, machinery, tools, books, finished work.  Auctions are usually our most lively monthly events.  There are always members starting out who need equipment and there are always members who need to clean our the basement or garage and get rid of some of the boxes of rocks that we rock hounds tend to accumulate!  All are welcome.  If you are interested in getting started in the lapidary hobby, this is a great meeting to come to!

November 12th, 2008

Petra, a city in Jordan

TLS member Sidney Perloe will give a presentation on Petra, a sandstone city in Jordan.  His presentation will include the Nabatean culture that created Petra and the high level of geological, engineering and artistic skills involved in carving a city out of desert sandstaone cliffs.  Specimens and slides of Petra will be included.
